Photography is…Storytelling

September 6 2010 Leave a comment

Using storytelling as a tool for your organization:

Recently the Craigslist Foundation used one of my images to illustrate their annual non-profit bootcamp. I was very excited that, not only was my image used by such a great organization, but that it was being used to illustrate the very reason I work in photography.

The power of photography is undeniable and like any tool it must be welded correctly and by someone familiar with it.

I come from a background is Sociology so I use the sociological method in my approach to photography. This can be easily understood in the Pre-production, production, post-production approach which is common in the multi-media fields.

During pre-production it is important to gather as much information as possible. Build shot lists, write down concept ideas, brainstorm how you can visual communicate your organizations message.

Production time is for the professionals. Whoever you assign to photograph your organization, they must have a clear list of goals to shoot for. If they do not have the guidance, expertise and vision necessary, then your images my not fully communicate in the way you want it too.

Post-production is the compilation of the media you gathered. The trick is to order the images, video/audio into a congruent narrative, which should convey the mission statement of your organization.

Photography is…creativity

To me, creativity is the skill of being prepared for opportunity. Creativity as a process set into motion both consciously and unconsciously.

My first step. A simple 1-2-3 approach to assignments:

Preproduction

Production

Post-production

PRE-pare for the unexpected, plan for the expected and always over-deliver.

PRO-fessional approach. Every project is the dream job.

POST-it. publish it. share it.

Create for others to see. Photography is a visual medium, people have to see to believe. If a tree falls in the woods, and you dont show anyone the photograph you took of it, did it really happen?

Of course, the bottom line is Production. Whether you used the latest technology or the oldest trick in your book, the final product should represent that and more.

Having these plans in mind helps me to capitalize on opportunities in a creative and professional manner. Now as far as the unconscious preparations, well you are what you eat.

Photography is has to be consumed. Studying the great photographers of our time as well as my peers are my favorite inspirations. Only after some time can creativity be useful on an unconscious way.

Magazines, books, printed and digital medium, as well as everyday life can help build your visual muscle memory. I study photography everyday. Like any physical sport, only repetition can give style and skill.

This blog is a project in progress . My goal is to connect, learn and share.
