CES 2001 after-action report

The Great Desert of Las Vegas, Nevada
Leaving at around 1900 hours from my base camp in Discovery Bay, California I headed west towards the great city of Oakland to pick up Felix for the great journey out into the desert city of Las Vegas. Felix, the technical editor at the Laney newspaper, is a good friend and proved to be a valuable member of the road crew. I listened to Motorhead that morning and was filled by the possibilities of life.
Making a quick pit stop in San Jose to drop off my brother, who was headed to Oklahoma, Felix and I continued south towards the desert. Southern California always needs the attention of travelers heading towards Las Vegas. We made quick time until we reached the outskirts of Los Angeles and drove away from it as fast as possible. Our southerly journey took an abrupt turn into the deserts we drove on.
Relying on my GPS system for navigation was a mistake to say the least. For one reason or other the machine decided to take us through some back roads. A computer calculated shortcut. Sure, why not, the promise of technology, I remember thinking. A heavy fog engulfed the road at midnight, making driving at reasonable speeds impossible. After crawling through the heavy blanket of fog we emerged into the desert somewhere near the Edwards Air Force base.
Stopping outside a bird sanctuary I caught a cat nap and awoke to a desert sunrise.
After quick to stop to grab a warm, greasy bite to eat and some really, really bad coffee to drink we finished the flat-out burn to the city of Las Vegas, Nevada where 2011 Consumer Electronics Show was starting.
